First, I would like to thank you for engaging in a legitimate— only slightly condescending— discussion about something you seem to care and know plenty about. I would like to also state a few things about myself. You were correct to assume that I’m white. and that I’m young. I am also an active member of the peace community, a feminist, and a gay-rights activist. In fact I went to a vigil for Trayvon earlier this year. Though I may be lucky enough not experience racism directly, I am not unaware of it. Having taken into consideration your eloquently worded arguments, I still fail to see how drunk teenagers wearing sombreros on the 5th of May and doing what they do anyway is racist. Racist meaning prejudiced against a particular race of people with malice and angry intentions. This is a classic case of misdirected anger. The simple act of putting a hat on someone who is otherwise not racist does not make them racist. What you look like doesn’t matter. What you do and how you treat people is what matters. Isn’t that what fighting racism is all about? I hate to make the comparison, but it reminds me of how the Christians claim a “war on christmas” every winter. If you simply want something to be angry about, then the silly fashion trends of teenagers is a good choice. If you actually want to make a difference, however, find a different target. I know this opinion is extremely unpopular, especially on tumblr. But it seems to have turned into another way for hipsters to feel better than everyone else. If the people from a specific culture do not make me uncomfortable.. why should their clothing?
